Reducing Infant Mortality – Short Film

Currently, America’s infant mortality rate ranks 42nd on the world stage.  With approximately six babies dying for every thousand born, the chances of surviving infancy in the United States are about as good as babies born in Croatia, Guam and Cuba.  In America, babies die at twice the rate as babies born in countries like Italy, Bermuda and Sweden, countries considered among the safest places to be born. Even more frightening, approximately 16 of every thousand African American babies die during infancy.  Those statistics compare to babies born in Malaysia and the West Bank.  And American babies who do survive?  Far too many are adversely affected by unnecessary medical procedures and prolonged separation from their parents.

At this critical moment in history, the US government is taking a close look at how our health care system operates.  Right now, it gets a failing mark at every stage before, during and after birth.  But this is America.  Our health system is supposed to be better than that.

That’s why we chose this time to release Reducing Infant Mortality.  This video points out the flaws in how the American healthcare system currently cares for babies and families and more importantly, identifies key ways to improve that care.

By highlighting the midwifery model of care (for healthy low-risk women), this film offers simple, affordable solutions that address many of the factors that directly impact infant mortality. We hope this film encourages policy makers to create a health care system that holds our families’ and infants’ health and wellbeing as its’ highest priority.  By Reducing Infant Mortality, our families will do more than survive – they will thrive.

We are advocating for a health care system in which it will be standard procedure for mothers and babies to thrive and not merely survive through birth and early life. The midwifery model of care will save our health care system millions of dollars each year.
